There are words that belong to no one by right, and that almost no one reads because of barriers of language and form. There are structures whose patents have long expired and that no one has rebuilt. This is an archive that opens both — as text you can actually read, and drawings you can actually build from.

Everything humanity has left as structure that can still be rebuilt today. Mechanisms inside expired patents, tools and buildings from local traditions, the mechanics of the natural world. The one condition: it can be rebuilt from materials at hand.
特許は切れている。知恵は、切れていない。
The patents have expired. The knowledge has not.
この二つは収蔵先の一覧ではなく、判定の基準です。新しい対象が現れたとき、私たちが問うのは「それは読むためのものか、作るためのものか」だけ。多くの資料は両方に属します——失効特許の明細書は読み物であり、同時に設計図です。
These are not a list of what we collect; they are a test. When something new appears we ask one question only: is this for reading, or for building? Much of the material is both — an expired patent specification is a document to read and a drawing to build from.
できることは、途方もなく小さくて構いません。一段落を訳すこと。一枚の図面を引くこと。翻刻しかできていない設計図を実際に組んでみて、動いた／動かなかったと報告すること。誰の許可も要らず、誰の資格も問いません。
What you can do may be absurdly small, and that is fine. Translate one paragraph. Draw one sheet. Take a drawing that has only been transcribed, build it, and report whether it ran. No permission is required and no credential is asked for.
